National Youth Leadership Training: Pack & Paddle Course

An intensive week long Leadership Training Course for Boy Scouts, Venturers, and Explorers who are 13 years of age or older and are of 1st Class rank and above. Pack & Paddle takes the popular and intensive National Youth Leadership Training Syllabus, adds a couple of extra days, and places the experience in the environment of a wilderness Backpacking and Canoeing trek.
NYLT is a life changing experience for many. While participants will be equipped to provide enthusiastic, and competent leadership for their Troop, Crew, or Post in the context of the Patrol Method, they will also gain leadership skills and experiences which will prove valuable throughout the rest of their lives. Not only will NYLT Pack & Paddle participants learn how to help lead their Troop, Crew or Post, but they will learn to do so in a wilderness trek environment, and maybe even pick up a few wilderness skills in the process.
Pack and Paddle is conducted at the Bay-Lakes Council’s beautiful Camp Hiawatha, situated deep in the Hiawatha National Forest of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Participants must be able to backpack and canoe to primitive back country campsites each night, and will live and work in a challenging and rustic environment. Canoes, paddles, PFDs, and backpacking stoves will be provided, but participants must bring their own quality backpack, footwear, rain gear, and lightweight tent.
Parents, participants, and leaders should understand that this is not a “Philmont”, or “Boundary Waters” experience, but an intensive leadership training experience, conducted using the challenges of trekking relatively short distances through a wilderness environment as a team.
Cost for the course is $300 if paid in full by July 1st, 2018. After that time the cost is $320. Keep in mind that this fee includes a highly specialized experience that is longer in duration than both Summer Camp, and the Traditional NYLT Course. The Course Fee also includes reasonable reimbursement for pre-approved gasoline receipts for those that provide car pool transportation to and from the Course. A $100 non refundable registration fee is required to hold your slot. Your Unit Leader’s approval must also be secured to attend the course.
Warning: Due to the trekking format of this course, participation numbers are limited, and enforced. Registration is first come, first served, with later registrations maintained on a waiting list.
